Offering fresh NZ cafe fare and a generous serving of political satire on the side, The Backbencher Gastropub is the perfect spot for all day dining and delectable drinks. Situated across the road from the Beehive, in Thorndon, Wellington, the premise is historic as one of Wellington’s oldest masonry buildings. After two devastating fires, we reopened in February 2013 showing off our newly renovated premises, keeping in line with the building’s historical significance and unique personality.
Our beautiful design layout features a 1000 wine glass display, separate lounge and dinning areas, as well a sports bar area. Our contemporary politician puppets are displayed as individual works of satirical art around the restaurant, as well as displays of satirical drawings by Tom Scott.
Our menus range from breakfast until late into the evening, catering for early birds, lunch time revelers, and late night snack hunters. Using fresh ingredients and creative recipes, you can be assured that you’ll be biting into a real treat whether you’re trying the duck or polenta salad.
Over the years, The Backbencher has been adorned by satirical political and sporting puppets.
With previous puppets such as a ‘Joan of Arc’ Helen Clark, ‘Batman & Robin’ John Key and Bill English, we’ve mirrored the halls of Parliament over the years in the most tasteful humorous way possible.
Our puppets begin as a 3D cartoon drawn by Murray Webb, and then physically formed by the talented hands of Bryce Curtis from WETA Workshop.
